On Wednesday September 30th The Woodstock Film Festival kicks of this year with a bang showing the New York premier of The Poet of Havana directed by Ron Chapman. The Poet of Havana explores the cultural significance of Carlos Varela who is a Cuban musician and has been fighting against his governments censorship of the arts for 30 years. His friend and collaborator is none other than Jackson Browne who has translated some of Varela's work.
The screening of The Poet of Havana is followed with a performance by Carlos Varela and Jackson Browne and takes place at the Ulster Performing Arts Center in Kingston, NY. On Saturday night legendary guitar player for Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna Jorma Kaukonen will be headlining the String Sample Concert at the Woodstock Playhouse. On Tuesday October 6th The Wood Brothers will be playing at the Bearsville Theater four days after the release of their latest album Paradise. Chris and Oliver Wood combine jazz, folk, country, and blues into a fresh sound that is a combination of decades of playing in their own successful bands. Chris Wood is a founding member of the jazz fusion trio Medeski, Martin, & Wood who are trailblazers of the jazz/jam band scene. MMW started playing in 1990 and have influenced countless bands that are touring today. Oliver Wood is a blues roots guitar player who toured with the legendary blues singer Tinsley Ellis and then formed his own group King Johnson. After decades of playing in their own bands the Wood Brothers have come together to create a new and original sound which is not to be missed. The legendary Midnight Ramble's held at Levon Helm's barn welcomes an equally legendary musician member of CSN Graham Nash. Nash has been an elite rock and roller since the early sixties with The Hollies who were a post Beatles British Invasion band. After leaving the Hollies at the end of the sixties Nash ended up in LA in the Laurel Canyon scene which was overflowing with amazing musicians all of which were becoming stars in their own right. The rest of Graham's story is legendary history meeting up with Steven Stills from The Buffalo Springfield and David Crosby from The Bryds. Crosby, Stills & Nash played their second gig at the original 1969 Woodstock Festival and then went on to become on of the biggest acts of the 1970's and today.
